When Last We Left the "Other Dynamic Duo"...
While on vacation in pre-World War II Tokyo with his parents (including his father, Dan Reid Jr, nephew of The Lone Ranger), Britt Reid rescues a drowning man, Ikano Kato.
Though Japanese himself, Ikano is marked for death by the Japanese government for not supporting the Emperor's militaristic policies.
Despite Japanese officials' protests, Britt's millionaire publisher father uses his considerable influence with the American government to cut bureaucratic red tape.

The Reids set sail for the good ol' USA, with Kato accompanying them.
You'll find out, mobster...
Wednesday!
And, hoo boy, are you gonna regret it!
Written by James Van Hise, pencilled by Dell Barras and inked by John Stangeland, this never-reprinted story from NOW's Tales of the Green Hornet V2N2 (1992) fills in the gaps about how Britt and Kato met, and how they ended up as alleged murderers wanted by law enforcement!
Note: the story follows up on the fact, established on the radio show and in the movie serials, that Kato was the one who handled the weapons and vehicle technology as well as designing the Hornet mask and insignia.
The 1960s TV show ignored that aspect of the character, but the otherwise-awful 2011 movie restored it!
